2007 PB in nice clean condition. The Best American Nonrequired Reading (BANR) was a series of irreverent anthologies published annually from 2002 to 2019 as part of the Houghton-Mifflin's 'Best American' collection. The mainstream and alternative fiction and nonfiction stories, essays, and poems included in each volume were selected annually by high school students in California and Michigan under the leadership of various editors, most notably Dave Eggers who edited the collections from 2002 to 2013.
From Amazon/GoodReads reviews: "This was a really solid collection of stories, essays, reporting, graphic novel, and more. Those high school kids know how to pick 'em, this series is always reliably quirky and good."; "I love these anthologies because they have something for everyone. This year's was as close to a perfect anthology as you can get. I rarely give BANR collections five stars but this one was exceptional. Only three more to go until I've finished all 16 years."; "Usually I'm not a fan of compilations (for some weird reason) but the unruliness of this one intrigued me. I'm so glad I took it. It's fun to glimpse into the past by reading writings from the time. Can't wait to read more editions."; "What were the kids thinking? An anthology compiled by high school students, this publication has been going on for several years wherein said students read everything they can get their hands on outside of their required reading texts in school and decide on some of the best to include in the anthology. These can range from non-fiction, lists of social media groups, fiction, and editorials. Together, it creates a snapshot of not only the literature of the year, but also where young people's heads are at and what they find important. A cool concept, absolutely, and let me tell you there are some bangers in here."
