2004 signed PB in nice clean condition. An historical fiction novel from Southwest Washington/Oregon author Jim McGee, based on his experience working on five major Pacific Northwest dam projects in the 1950s. In this novel, McGee captures the drama of the great dam building era in our region and of the men and their families that followed the heavy construction from project to project.
From the Introduction: "Little is known of the role of a high-scaler. He does his job of making the cliffs safe for his fellow construction workers during the time of construction, and for the general public after the construction job is done. You and I travel the mountain passes of the West with little concern, thanks in part to the men who took the risks of high-scaling. This novel portrays but a glimpse of the life of the high-scaler and the families who follow their construction men from job to job.
For a fuller appreciation of the hazards of high-scaling work, you can watch this 2-minute PBS video clip showing high-scalers working during the construction of the Hoover Dam.
"It moves quickly, has interesting characters and is constructed in a spare, barebones manner. It delivers history and adventure."-Dan Hayes- Statesmen Journal Oct. 2004. "Jerry McGee has captured the drama of the great dam building era and of the men that followed heavy construction."-Patrick Wilkins W. Salem Weekly.
